Before You Buy
To ensure this device meets your needs and works with your existing setup, please review the following requirements before purchasing.
You Need an Electric Meter
It is important to understand that ZiggyMeter is not an electric meter itself. It does not measure power directly from the lines. Instead, it reads data from your existing utility meter.
Therefore, you must already have a compatible electric meter installed to use ZiggyMeter.
Meter Compatibility
Not all electric meters can be used. Your meter must meet specific technical requirements:
Optical Interface
Your meter must be equipped with IEC 62056-21 optical interface. This is usually a round port on the face of the meter used for data communication.
Communication Protocol
Having an optical interface is necessary but not sufficient. The meter must also use a compatible communication protocol. The meter have to use IEC 62056‑21:2002 compatible protocol in one of the modes: A, B, C, D but not E.
Many manufacturers state compatibility with IEC 62056-21. However, simply supporting IEC 62056-21 is not enough, as there are different modes and implementations. Please verify your meter's specifications or consult your utility provider to confirm compatibility.
Protocols: DLMS, DLMS/COSEM, SML, M‑Bus, and ANSI C12.18/19 are not supported.
Meters Are Different
Even with a compatible meter, the amount of data available for analysis depends on the specific model. Different meter types expose different sets of data points.
You can generally expect the meter to always provide basic parameters like energy delivered from the grid. Other parameters, such as maximum voltage or current depend on the meter’s capabilities and configuration.
Network Requirements
To operate ZiggyMeter, you need a suitable network environment. You can choose between WiFi or Zigbee connectivity:
WiFi
The device supports 2.4 GHz networks only. 5 GHz or 6 GHz networks are not supported.
Zigbee
You will need a Zigbee Coordinator (hub/gateway). ZiggyMeter operates as a Zigbee End Device. It does not function as a router or coordinator.
Ensure your gateway allows joining devices from third-party manufacturers (not only the gateway vendor's own devices).
Software & Integration
To visualize and analyze your power consumption/production data, you will need compatible software or a smart home platform.
For Zigbee Users
ZiggyMeter is designed to work with IoT ecosystems that support the Measurement and Power Clusters (ZCL v8).
It may happen that even if ZiggyMeter exposes specific data, the platform ignores it.
For WiFi Users
If you choose to connect via WiFi, you have options:
- Home Assistant: Native integration support.
- ZiggyMeter Web UI: View real-time data directly on the device's web interface.
- Custom Integration: Use the REST API to build your own solution.
