Home Assistant
Home Assistant is an open-source home automation platform that runs locally, integrates thousands of devices, and lets you build dashboards and automations.
ZiggyMeter integrates two ways. They are mutually exclusive in practice, because the device uses one radio at a time.
Which one to choose
| Native (Wi-Fi) | Zigbee (ZHA) | |
|---|---|---|
| Transport | HTTPS to the Home Assistant REST API | Zigbee mesh via your coordinator |
| Datapoints | All the meter returns | Those mapped to ZCL attributes |
| Setup | URL + long-lived token | Standard Zigbee pairing |
| Power use | High — needs Wi-Fi | Low |
| Needs a coordinator | No | Yes |
| Firmware updates | Web interface or API | Automatic via ZHA OTA |
| Best for | Mains-powered devices with good Wi-Fi | Battery-powered devices, existing Zigbee setups |
TIP
Rule of thumb: mains socket at the meter → Native. Batteries → Zigbee.
Native (Wi-Fi)Create a token, point the device at your instance, verify the sensors.Zigbee (ZHA)Pair through ZHA and set up automatic firmware updates.Energy dashboardFeed grid consumption and return-to-grid.
Whichever you pick, the last step is the same: add the energy sensors to the Energy dashboard so Home Assistant can show cost and consumption over time.
