Zigbee setup
Zigbee is the low-power option. On batteries it is the only sensible choice: the radio is active for a fraction of the time Wi-Fi needs, and the mesh relays messages through routers so the device does not need a strong direct link.
ZiggyMeter joins as a Zigbee End Device. It is not a router and not a coordinator.
What you need
- A Zigbee coordinator — a hub, or a USB adapter running software such as Zigbee2MQTT, ZHA in Home Assistant, or a commercial gateway
- The coordinator must accept third-party devices, not only its vendor's own products
- Support for Zigbee Cluster Library v8 clusters, which is what ZiggyMeter exposes
Enable Zigbee on the device
Zigbee is disabled by default. Turn it on in the web interface:
- Open Zigbee.
- Set Configuration to ENABLED.
- Select .
WARNING
Changing the Zigbee enable state restarts the device.
Join a network
Enable permit-join on your coordinator. In Zigbee2MQTT this is Permit join at the bottom of the menu; in ZHA it is Add device; hubs usually have an "add device" button.
Put ZiggyMeter into joining mode, either way:
- Button — click 3 times in quick succession. If the device is asleep, use 4 clicks: the first click only wakes it.
- Web interface — Zigbee → .
The blue LED blinks slowly while the device looks for a network:
Wait for the coordinator to find it. Once joined, the blue LED goes solid:
and the Zigbee page fills in the channel, short address, PAN ID and extended PAN ID.
INFO
A Zigbee reset removes the device from its current network before looking for a new one. Use it whenever you move the device to a different coordinator.
Verify
On the Zigbee page, the Status section should show:
| Field | What it means |
|---|---|
| Channel | Radio channel of the network, 11–26 |
| Short address | 16-bit address the coordinator assigned |
| PAN ID | 16-bit network identifier |
| Extended PAN ID | 64-bit unique network identifier |
Empty fields mean the device has not joined. Check that permit-join is still open and that the device is in range of the coordinator or a mains-powered router.
What the device exposes
Two endpoints, all standard ZCL clusters — no manufacturer-specific extensions:
| Endpoint | Purpose |
|---|---|
| 1 | Device identification, battery, temperature. The On/Off switch enables or disables Wi-Fi. |
| 2 | Meter data. The On/Off switch triggers a meter reading. |
The full cluster and attribute list is in Integrations → Zigbee.
Wi-Fi while running on Zigbee
You can still bring Wi-Fi up temporarily — to change a setting or use the API — by holding the button for 3 seconds. It is not permanent; the device returns to Zigbee-only operation afterwards.
